Teft is a darkeyed Alethi soldier in his fifties who serves as Kaladin’s sergeant in Bridge Four, becomes the first bridgeman to suspect Kaladin can use Stormlight, and later bonds the honorspren Phendorana as a Windrunner. He struggles with a firemoss addiction for years and dies at Moash’s hands in Rhythm of War. Spoilers through Rhythm of War follow.
Who is Teft in the Stormlight Archive?
Teft is one of the original members of Bridge Four in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive, introduced in The Way of Kings as a gruff older bridgeman in Sadeas’ army on the Shattered Plains. Coppermind describes him as a darkeyed man from Alethkar in his fifties, with tan skin, drooping cheeks, grizzled hair and a neat, square beard of light brown mixed with gray. Teft is blunt and matter of fact, carries a deep grudge against lighteyes, and quietly watches out for everyone in the crew. Unlike most of Bridge Four, he also has no slave brand, because he came to the bridge crews as a former sergeant being punished, not as a slave. Our Kaladin Stormblessed guide covers the captain he spends four books standing beside.
What happened in Teft’s childhood with the Envisagers?
Teft’s childhood in the Alethi town of Talinar explains almost everything about him, from his knowledge of the Radiants to his shame. According to Coppermind, his family belonged to the sixth nahn and joined the Envisagers, a cult that believed bringing back the Voidbringers would also bring back the Knights Radiant. Envisagers deliberately put their lives in danger, hoping that Surgebinding powers would manifest, and Teft’s mother died in one of those attempts. His parents had taught him the basics of Stormlight and what the Radiants could do. When Teft was eight years old he reported the Envisagers to the citylord, and every member was tried and executed, including his father, whom Teft watched being hanged. Teft carries that guilt into adulthood, which is why he keeps telling Kaladin that he cannot be trusted.
How did Teft discover Kaladin’s powers?
Teft is the first person in the Stormlight Archive to suspect that Kaladin is becoming a Surgebinder, and his suspicion saves Kaladin’s life. In The Way of Kings, before Kaladin is strung up outside to face a highstorm, Teft presses a dun sphere into his hand “for luck.” After the storm the sphere is still dun, even though a highstorm should have infused it, and Kaladin is alive when he should be dead. Coppermind records that Teft then brought three infused diamond spheres while Kaladin lay feverish, waited, and saw him breathe in the Light and glow faintly. Teft repeated the treatment just enough to heal him without alerting the other bridgemen. Later he throws a surprise punch to make Kaladin inhale Stormlight on reflex, and he is the one who teaches Kaladin the words of the First Ideal from his Envisager childhood.
What role does Teft play as Bridge Four’s sergeant?
Teft serves as the sergeant to Kaladin’s captain from the moment Kaladin learns he has military experience, and Coppermind notes that he fills the role without ever needing to feel superior. In The Way of Kings he runs the spear training in the chasms and takes charge when Kaladin is wounded or away. After Dalinar trades his Shardblade Oathbringer for the bridgemen in Words of Radiance, Kaladin makes Teft a lieutenant and puts him in overall charge of training the former bridge crews, organizing them into groups of forty and choosing two sergeants from each. While Kaladin and Shallan are lost in the chasms, the crew makes Teft their leader and he takes almost every watch, never doubting that Kaladin will return. At the Battle of Narak he notices some bridgemen glowing faintly and correctly guesses they are becoming Kaladin’s squires.
Why is Teft addicted to firemoss?
Teft’s firemoss addiction began during his years as a spearman in Sadeas’ army, when his squadmates convinced him to try the drug, and Coppermind describes it as a lifelong source of shame and grief. The addiction gets worse in Words of Radiance and Oathbringer, because the more money Dalinar pays him, the more Teft spends in moss dens, disappearing for hours without explanation. Kaladin and Rock eventually find him in one of those dens, pay his tab and carry him back to the barracks. Teft speaks the first two Windrunner Ideals hoping they will cure the craving, discovers they do not, and then tries to drive away his honorspren because he feels unworthy. In Oathbringer he is even arrested for public intoxication, and Navani quietly uses her seal to free him at Aladar’s request.
How did Teft’s coat lead to Eth’s death?
Teft’s lowest point in the Stormlight Archive comes in an Oathbringer interlude, when his addiction costs Bridge Four a life. Coppermind records that Teft had sold his Bridge Four coat, with its lieutenant’s knots, to afford a little more firemoss. When the crew returns to Urithiru from Thaylen City, Teft’s honorspren Phendorana appears and warns him of danger, and they find Rock and Bisig unconscious in the barracks and Eth dead. Eth had been carrying the Honorblade of Jezrien that day, and the blade was gone. Bisig wakes long enough to say the attacker wore a Bridge Four coat with lieutenant’s knots, which is why nobody was on guard. Teft realizes the coat was his own and runs from the barracks in shame, straight toward the singer invasion that is about to come through the Oathgate.
How does Teft swear the Third Ideal?
Teft swears the Third Ideal of the Windrunners near the end of Oathbringer, hiding in the dark in Urithiru while singers flood the tower through the Kholinar Oathgate. Phendorana keeps finding him no matter how far he runs, and she finally persuades him to speak his personal version of the oath, which is about protecting the people he hates even when the one he hates most is himself. Coppermind notes that the Third Ideal lets his honorspren become a living Shardblade that he can summon as a spear, a shield or other weapons and switch almost instantly. After the invaders are beaten, Teft arrives at the Battle of Thaylen Field through the Oathgate with Bridge Four and a division of Alethi soldiers, and the crew of Bridge Thirteen become his squires. Our Windrunners guide lists every Ideal of his order.
“I will protect those I hate.”

What does Teft do in Rhythm of War?
Teft spends Rhythm of War choosing to stay a sergeant rather than become a commander. Coppermind records that after Dalinar relieves Kaladin from active duty, Kaladin tries to make Teft companylord of the Windrunners, and Teft refuses so firmly that Sigzil gets the post instead. When Kaladin decides to work as a surgeon with his father Lirin, Teft withdraws from battle and becomes his assistant, telling him that the two of them were the start of Bridge Four and ought to stick together. They track down the refugee Noril at the Devotary of Mercy, where Teft summons Phendorana as a Shardspear to make an unhelpful ardent cooperate. Teft also helps run the group therapy meetings Kaladin starts, and he keeps pushing Kaladin to attend them himself. He stays sober, settling for orange wine at Jez’s Duty after Kaladin reminds him that giving in a little would slide him back.
How does Teft die in Rhythm of War?
Teft dies in Urithiru during the occupation, after Raboniel’s Voidlight suppression leaves him unconscious for days. Kaladin hides him and feeds him until Lift heals him, and Teft wakes believing he has relapsed, then learns he is still sober. Coppermind’s account of the final battle describes Teft and Lift sneaking into Lirin’s clinic to heal the captive Radiants and springing the trap Moash had set for Kaladin. Armed only with a dagger, Teft fights to keep Moash’s attention off Lift, and with Phendorana he manifests a phantom spear shaft that blocks a killing blow. Moash then stabs Phendorana with a raysium dagger set with an anti-Stormlight gem, killing her permanently, and kills Teft with the Honorblade of Jezrien. Teft’s last words tell Moash that he dies knowing he is loved, which Moash can never take from him.
“Because I die knowing I’m loved.”
Teft to Moash, Rhythm of War
Teft’s death is one of the triggers that pushes Kaladin to the top of Urithiru, and it is also part of what lets him swear the Fourth Ideal. In Kaladin’s vision, his brother Tien points out that Kaladin has been counting only the moment he failed to save Teft, not all the times he helped him. After the tower is freed, Bridge Four has Teft’s body Soulcast into stone and places the statue in a hidden room the Sibling knows, among statues of fallen Radiants. The mortician could not turn Teft’s habitual scowl into a smile, which the crew found appropriate, and a sculptor later adds a likeness of Phendorana beside him. As a final promise to his sergeant, Kaladin starts attending his own therapy sessions. Our saddest moments ranking places Teft’s death second.
Why do fans love Teft?
Teft is one of the most beloved characters in the Stormlight Archive because his story is about recovery rather than victory. Brandon Sanderson gives him no prophecy and no crown, only a grudge, a drug habit and a crew of broken men who need a sergeant. Teft fails repeatedly on the page, sells the coat that gets Eth killed, and still swears an oath to protect people he hates, including himself. By Rhythm of War he is sober, happy over small things, and willing to admit that Phendorana was right that he was worth saving. Coppermind cites Words of Brandon saying Sanderson planned from early on that Moash would kill Teft, which is why the death lands so hard. For readers who have struggled with addiction or shame, Teft is the proof that taking the next step still counts.
Frequently asked questions
Does Teft die in the Stormlight Archive?
Yes. Teft dies in Rhythm of War, the fourth Stormlight Archive book, during the occupation of Urithiru. Coppermind records that Moash ambushes him and Lift in Lirin’s clinic, kills his honorspren Phendorana with a raysium dagger set with an anti-Stormlight gem, and then kills Teft with the Honorblade of Jezrien. Bridge Four later has his body Soulcast into a stone statue.
What is Teft’s spren called?
Teft’s honorspren is called Phendorana. Teft spends much of Oathbringer trying to drive her away out of shame over his firemoss addiction, but Phendorana keeps returning and persuades him to swear the Third Ideal of the Windrunners. In Rhythm of War, Teft admits she was right all along that he was worth saving. Moash permanently kills Phendorana moments before killing Teft.
What is Teft’s Third Ideal?
Teft swears the Third Ideal of the Windrunners near the end of Oathbringer, while hiding in Urithiru during the singer invasion through the Oathgate. Windrunner Third Ideals are personal, and Teft’s version is about protecting the people he hates, including himself. Swearing it lets Phendorana become a living Shardblade that he can summon as a spear, a shield or other weapons.
Why does Teft have a Bridge Four tattoo without a slave brand?
Teft never had a slave brand on his forehead, unlike most of Bridge Four. Coppermind notes that when the crew went to get tattoos covering their brands after joining Dalinar’s guard in Words of Radiance, Teft got the Bridge Four glyphs anyway. The tattoo shows that he sees himself as part of the crew rather than as an older sergeant standing outside it.
Who is Teft based on?
Teft began as Hine, a character from Brandon Sanderson’s unpublished novel Mythwalker who did not survive the revision that became Warbreaker. According to Words of Brandon cited on Coppermind, Sanderson combined Hine with an aspect of another Mythwalker character named Voko and placed him in Bridge Four. Sanderson also planned from early on that Moash would be the one to kill Teft.
