Every god in Brandon Sanderson's cosmere is a piece of the same broken one. When Adonalsium was shattered, its power split into sixteen Shards, and each Shard is pulled toward a single Intent: Honor toward oaths, Cultivation toward growth, Ruin toward endings, Endowment toward giving. This reading turns that idea around. Answer eight questions about how you actually live, and find out which Shard would choose you, which one you would clash with, and how close you sit to all twelve.
What is a Shard of Adonalsium?
A Shard is a fragment of the power of creation, and a Vessel is the person who picks it up. The power is close to infinite, but it comes with a direction. Each Shard is polarized toward one aspect of the whole, its Intent, and over time that Intent shapes the mind holding it. That is why a Shard reads so well as a personality: it is not a costume, it is a single value pushed to its absolute limit. Preservation wants nothing lost. Dominion wants everything in its place. Autonomy wants to answer to no one. Most people carry a little of several, and the interesting part of the result is usually the second and third Shards on your list, not only the first.
If you want the full roster with homeworlds, what happened to each Shard and the theories worth arguing about, read our guide to every Shard of Adonalsium explained. It contains late-series spoilers. This quiz does not.
How the Shard quiz works
There are eight questions with four answers each. Every answer pushes hard toward one Shard and gently toward a second, so no single choice decides your result. Your alignment with each Shard is the share of its possible points you collected, so a top result around 50 to 70 percent is normal and anything above 80 is a strong match. While you play, the glow behind the questions shifts toward the Shard you are leaning to. At the end your card turns over, and the full reading shows what your Shard says about you, its shadow side, your alignment with all twelve, the Shard your answers pulled furthest away from, and the book where your Shard lives.
Twelve of the sixteen Shards are in the reading: Honor, Odium, Cultivation, Preservation, Ruin, Devotion, Dominion, Endowment, Autonomy, Ambition, Virtuosity and Whimsy. Invention, Valor, Reason and Mercy are left out on purpose, because what is known about them is either very thin or comes from late in the series.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Shards of Adonalsium are there?
Sixteen. Adonalsium was shattered into sixteen equal Shards, each polarized toward one Intent. This quiz uses the twelve whose Intents are known well enough to read a personality from.
Does the Shard quiz contain spoilers?
No late-series spoilers. The results describe each Shard's Intent and its homeworld, and never say who holds which Shard today. The answer about Honor will not spoil anything in The Way of Kings, and the one about Ruin will not spoil the Mistborn trilogy.
Do I need to have read the Cosmere to take it?
No. The questions are about you, not about the books. Lore knowledge does not change your result, and each result tells you which book to read to meet your Shard.
What does the percentage mean?
It is how much of a Shard's possible score your answers collected. Each Shard can be reached through several answers, and 100 percent means you picked every answer that leaned toward it.
What is the Shard I clash with?
It is the Shard your answers pulled furthest away from. Its Intent is the one you are least likely to live by, so expect friction with people who do.
