Who is Navani Kholin in the Stormlight Archive?

Navani Kholin is an Alethi lighteyes, the dowager queen of Alethkar and one of the main supporting characters of the Stormlight Archive. She was married to King Gavilar Kholin, is mother to Jasnah and Elhokar, and was sister-in-law and later wife to Dalinar, which also makes her aunt and stepmother to Adolin and Renarin. In the early books Alethi society treats her as a widow to be kept comfortable and ignored, and she uses that freedom to say what she thinks. Her real passion is fabrial science, the engineering of devices powered by spren trapped in gemstones. Navani insists she is a patron of scholars rather than a scholar herself, but the Coppermind describes her as a brilliant systems engineer who leads whole teams of ardents to results no single researcher could reach.

What was Navani’s marriage to Gavilar really like?

Navani’s marriage to Gavilar Kholin looked like a royal partnership and was, by its final years, a cold one. Navani once wavered between Gavilar and his younger brother Dalinar and chose the future king. During the unification of Alethkar she and Ialai Sadeas schemed at dinners to hold together the kingdom their husbands were conquering. The Rhythm of War prologue shows the night Gavilar died from Navani’s eyes: she covers for her missing husband at the feast, then finds him in her study with the Heralds Nale and Kalak and a set of strange dark spheres. When she presses him, Gavilar tells her she is no true scholar. Furious, Navani burns a glyphward praying for his death. Hours later he is dead, and she chooses to stay silent and let him keep his legacy. Our Jasnah Kholin guide covers how that night shaped her daughter.

Why does Navani return to the Shattered Plains?

Navani returns to the Shattered Plains in The Way of Kings because she realizes the warcamps, not Kholinar, have become the true seat of Alethi power. She brings news that the Vedens have perfected half-shards, wants to protect her son King Elhokar, and needs to speak with Dalinar. She later admits the deeper reason: as a widow she no longer had a home at court. Dalinar picks Navani to record his visions because she is exacting and the only woman in the warcamps he fully trusts. Navani notices that his ravings have too much order to be madness, matches a phrase to the Dawnchant, the lost language of the Heralds, and uses his visions as a key for her scholars to translate it. The Dalinar Kholin guide follows his side of those visions.

How did Navani and Dalinar end up together?

Navani and Dalinar end up together slowly and against Alethi custom, since society considers a man’s brother’s widow to be his sister. Navani pursues the relationship openly and makes clear she will not stop for tradition, since their union is not explicitly forbidden. When Sadeas betrays Dalinar at the Tower and everyone believes him dead, Navani paints an enormous prayer glyph on the stones of the Plains, Thath, meaning Justice, because Dalinar has no wife or daughters left to pray for him. After he survives, the two stop hiding. In Oathbringer they marry in Urithiru with the Stormfather himself officiating. Navani later teaches Dalinar to read and write and helps him draft his autobiography, Oathbringer, My Glory and My Shame. See the best Dalinar Kholin quotes for how he talks about her.

What fabrials did Navani Kholin invent?

Navani Kholin’s fabrials change the war long before she ever touches Stormlight herself. She led the research behind the grandbows and the painrial, an early device that dulls pain, and her teams built a platform that defies gravity so archers could shoot from above the battlefield. At the Battle of Narak in Words of Radiance, her light fabrials bathe the night in even white light and her new attractors pull rain from the air so Roion’s archers can keep firing. Her ardents also discover that the gemstone on a Shardblade’s pommel was likely never part of the original weapon, which leads to the realization that Radiants do not need gems to bond Blades. By Rhythm of War she has designed the Fourth Bridge, a flying ship that evacuates Hearthstone. Our Stormlight magic system guide explains how fabrials fit the wider magic.

What does Navani do in Oathbringer?

Navani Kholin carries the politics of Oathbringer while Dalinar struggles with his returning memories. When Dalinar sets out to unite Roshar against Odium, Navani becomes the main political voice speaking to each monarch. At the first meeting of rulers in Urithiru she makes every leader carry their own chair, an old Alethi custom meaning each chief brings wisdom to the gathering, and then assigns each kingdom a role that matches its strengths, from Azish law codes to Thaylen trade. Taravangian’s leak of Dalinar’s secrets breaks the coalition anyway. At the Battle of Thaylen Field, Navani and Queen Fen survive the collapse of their tower, and when Amaram’s soldiers try to execute Fen’s consort Kmakl, Navani knocks them down with her painrial. Adolin then brings her the news that Elhokar died in Kholinar. Read Oathbringer Ending Explained for the full battle.

How does Navani resist the occupation of Urithiru?

Navani Kholin resists the occupation of Urithiru in Rhythm of War by thinking faster than the invaders. With Dalinar and the army away in Emul, a mysterious correspondent on a spanreed turns out to be the Sibling, the long silent spren of the tower, warning that singers have infiltrated Urithiru. When the Fused corrupt the tower and every Radiant inside collapses, Navani leads Kholin soldiers to the basement, uses tuning forks to infuse hidden gemstones, and raises a shield around the pillar that forms the Sibling’s heart. Then she surrenders to the Fused Raboniel and accepts work as her research assistant. Under guard she keeps her scholars on busy work, sends nonsense ciphers to occupy the spies, and secretly relays information through the Sibling to Kaladin, the one Radiant still awake. The Rhythm of War ending explained picks up the climax.

What is Navani’s relationship with Raboniel?

Navani’s relationship with Raboniel is the most unusual partnership in the series: two enemies who become true scientific collaborators. Raboniel, the Lady of Wishes, appeals to Navani’s curiosity, and together they discover that Soulcasters and the tower’s lifts are made directly of spren rather than powered by trapped ones. By singing Honor’s rhythm against Odium’s, they create Warlight and a new rhythm Raboniel names the Rhythm of War, and Raboniel grants Navani the title Voice of Lights. Navani then works out anti-Voidlight through sound and music theory, and Raboniel turns the breakthrough into anti-Stormlight meant to kill the sleeping Radiants. Navani stabs Raboniel with an anti-Voidlight dagger. Later, at Raboniel’s own request, she ends her life with it while the two sing the tones of Honor and Odium together, and genuinely mourns her afterward.

How does Navani become a Bondsmith?

Navani becomes a Bondsmith at the climax of Rhythm of War, when Moash comes to kill her and the gravely wounded Raboniel holds him off just long enough. In that window Navani negotiates a bond with the Sibling, who had distrusted her for years of trapping spren in gemstones, and swears the First Ideal. The Nahel bond grants her the Surges of Tension and Adhesion, the same pair Dalinar uses. Together, Navani and the Sibling generate enough Towerlight to power the whole city fabrial of Urithiru, and Navani can feel the tower’s systems, communicate with the Sibling mind to mind and go without sleep. Freshly bonded, she drives Moash away, restores the tower and sends the invaders running. Dalinar later praises her for saving Urithiru alone. Our Bondsmiths guide explains the three Bondsmith spren.

What happens to Navani in Wind and Truth?

Navani Kholin’s Wind and Truth arc centers on the Contest of Champions and the risk of losing Dalinar. Back in Urithiru, she plans with Wit, who reveals that Taravangian has ascended as the new Vessel of Odium, and she resolves to take Dalinar’s place as champion if needed. When Dalinar returns changed from the Spiritual Realm, Navani kisses him in front of a crowd and urges him to act on his own beliefs rather than on what others think. After receiving his final message of love, she sets her grief aside and helps the Sibling build defenses against Retribution. Those defenses freeze Navani in crystal inside the tower, alive but appearing asleep and unable to speak. Wind and Truth leaves her there, which makes her return a major question for the back five books. Our Wind and Truth summary covers the wider ending.

Why do readers love Navani Kholin?

Readers love Navani Kholin because her growth runs on curiosity and stubbornness instead of combat. Navani spends four books doubting her own worth, partly because Gavilar told her she was no real scholar, and Rhythm of War finally lets her prove the opposite in the most dangerous lab imaginable. Sanderson has described her as an orthodox theist, a traditionalist who wants the old Vorin faith to work while reconciling it with what she discovers, and that tension makes her a rare religious scientist in fantasy. Navani is also a few months older than Dalinar, and their romance is one of the few long running adult love stories in epic fantasy. Her arc pairs well with her daughter’s, so read the Jasnah vs Shallan comparison next.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Navani Kholin married to?

Navani Kholin was first married to King Gavilar Kholin, with whom she had Jasnah and Elhokar. After Gavilar’s assassination she fell in love with his brother, Dalinar Kholin, and married him in Oathbringer in a ceremony officiated by the Stormfather, a union many Alethi considered improper.

Is Navani Kholin a Knight Radiant?

Yes. At the end of Rhythm of War, Navani Kholin forms a Nahel bond with the Sibling, the spren of Urithiru, and becomes a Bondsmith. The bond grants her the Surges of Tension and Adhesion and lets her and the Sibling produce enough Towerlight to power the entire tower.

What is Navani’s spren?

Navani’s spren is the Sibling, the third of the three Bondsmith spren alongside the Stormfather and the Nightwatcher. The Sibling is the spren of Urithiru and distrusted Navani at first because her fabrials trap spren inside gemstones, but accepted her oath during the singer occupation of the tower.

Does Navani die in the Stormlight Archive?

No, Navani is alive at the end of Wind and Truth. To protect Urithiru, she helps the Sibling raise defenses that leave her sealed in crystal inside the tower, alive but appearing asleep and unable to communicate. Her return is one of the open questions for the back five books.

Why did Navani choose Gavilar over Dalinar?

Navani chose Gavilar over Dalinar because the young Dalinar frightened her. Both brothers were interested in her, and she picked the future king. Decades later she told Dalinar that the same intensity fascinated her once he had learned to wrap it in the self control he built across the War of Reckoning.
