Roshar Explained: The World of the Stormlight Archive

Roshar is one of the most scientifically detailed fictional worlds ever built. Every element of its geography, ecology, and weather is internally consistent. Here is how it works.

The Planet

Roshar is a rocky planet orbiting a binary star system alongside two other inhabited worlds: Braize (Damnation) and Ashyn (the Tranquiline Halls of Vorin religion). The planet is smaller than Earth with higher gravity in some regions. The most distinctive feature of Roshar is its permanent storm system.

The Highstorms

Highstorms are planetary-scale storm systems that move from east to west across Roshar every few days. They carry Stormlight, the condensed power of Honor, which is the fuel for all Radiant powers and most Rosharan technology. The storms are violent enough to kill anything caught in the open. All Rosharan architecture and animal life has evolved around them.

The Ecology

Because of the constant storms, Rosharan plant and animal life has evolved to be retractable. Grass pulls into the ground when shadow passes over it. Cremlings (small crustacean-like creatures) are everywhere. Chulls, the draft animals of Roshar, have thick shells. Trees are rare and grow in sheltered locations called leeward positions. The eastern edge of continents and exposed rock faces are scoured bare; the western faces support life.

The Shattered Plains

The Shattered Plains are a plateau region in southeastern Roshar near the city of Kholinar and the Unclaimed Hills. The plains were created by an ancient weapon, a prototype of the weapon later called the Dawnshard. They are divided into hundreds of plateaus separated by chasms where the chasmfiends, enormous crustaceans, pupate before emerging as adults. The Alethi and Parshendi fight on these plateaus at the start of the series.

Urithiru

Urithiru is the ancient tower-city of the Knights Radiant, built at the center of the continent far from any highstorm path. It is powered by the Sibling, a Bondsmith spren who went into Slumber after the Recreance. The tower has hundreds of floors, self-sustaining agriculture, and ancient Fabrial systems that went dormant when the Sibling slept. Recovering Urithiru is a central plot element across the series.

The Cognitive Realm (Shadesmar)

Roshar has a direct analog in the Cognitive Realm. Where the Physical Realm shows land and ocean, Shadesmar shows the inverse: the oceans of Roshar appear as land (beads of Investiture), and the landmasses appear as ocean. Spren live primarily in Shadesmar and cross into the Physical Realm through Perpendicularities or through Nahel bonds. Travel through Shadesmar is faster in some cases than physical travel.

FAQ

Why is Rosharan wildlife so different from Earth?

Rosharan life evolved under constant highstorm bombardment over millions of years. The dominant survival strategy is retractability: animals have shells, exoskeletons, or retreating behaviors, and plants pull into rock or ground when threatened. This is why grass on Roshar retracts like sea anemones, why most animals resemble crustaceans, and why bark-like or shell-like structures dominate the landscape. The storms also deposit Stormlight across the surface, which fundamentally shaped what kinds of organisms can thrive on the planet.

Where does Stormlight come from?

Stormlight is the condensed power of Honor, one of the sixteen Shards of Adonalsium. It is carried in highstorms across the planet and can be captured in spheres (small glass containers holding gemstones that absorb and hold the light). Infused spheres glow and can be drained by Surgebinders to power their abilities. Stormlight also accelerates healing, provides enhanced physical ability, and is the fuel for most advanced Fabrials on Roshar.

What are the Shattered Plains and why do they matter?

The Shattered Plains are a massive plateau region where the first three Stormlight books center much of their action. They were shattered by an ancient weapon millennia before the series begins. The Alethi highprinces hunt chasmfiends on the plateaus as part of a war against the Parshendi, the Listener people who assassinated Gavilar Kholin. The plateau structure, the chasms, and the resources underneath the plains drive the military and political conflict of the early series.
