Mistborn Magic Systems Explained: Allomancy, Feruchemy, Hemalurgy

Mistborn’s magic runs on Allomancy โ€” swallowing flakes of metal and “burning” them inside your body for a specific power. Unlike Stormlight’s Surgebinding, which grants two Surges through a spren bond, Allomancy is metal-based, physical, and (mostly) genetic rather than earned through oaths.

Allomancy: Burning Metal

Allomancers ingest small amounts of specific metals and “burn” them for an effect โ€” pushing or pulling on nearby metal, boosting physical strength, enhancing senses, or manipulating emotions. A Misting can burn one metal; a Mistborn can burn all sixteen. Vin, the protagonist of Era One, is one of the rare Mistborn.

Feruchemy: Storing Attributes

Feruchemists store personal attributes โ€” strength, memory, health, warmth โ€” inside metal objects called metalminds, then draw them back out later. Unlike Allomancy, Feruchemy doesn’t create power from nothing; it only redistributes what you already have across time. A Feruchemist who stores strength today will be weaker until they tap that metalmind later.

Hemalurgy: The Forbidden Third Path

Hemalurgy steals magical powers by driving a metal spike through a living being at the moment of death, transferring a piece of their soul into the spike. It’s the darkest of the three systems โ€” every use kills or maims someone, and it’s how the series’ most dangerous villains gain their abilities. Hemalurgy is banned knowledge for a reason.

How Scadrial’s Magic Compares to Roshar’s Surgebinding

Surgebinding on Roshar requires a living bond with a sentient spren and moral commitment to spoken Ideals โ€” power grows as the Radiant grows as a person. Allomancy requires none of that: it’s largely inherited through bloodline, and burning metal works the same whether you’re a hero or a monster. Where Stormlight Archive ties power to character growth, Mistborn ties it to bloodline and resource management โ€” swallow the metal, burn it, run out, swallow more.

FAQ

What is Allomancy in Mistborn?

Allomancy is a magic system where practitioners ingest and “burn” flakes of specific metals inside their body to gain a power โ€” such as enhanced strength, pushing or pulling on nearby metal objects, or heightened senses. Someone who can burn one metal is a Misting; someone who can burn all sixteen is a Mistborn.

What’s the difference between Allomancy and Feruchemy?

Allomancy generates power by burning metal for a temporary effect that fades once the metal is used up. Feruchemy instead stores a person’s own attribute, like strength or memory, inside a metal object for later retrieval, without creating new power, only redistributing it across time.

Is Hemalurgy the strongest magic system in Mistborn?

Hemalurgy can grant the most raw, stacked power of the three systems, but at a severe cost: every spike requires killing or maiming a living being to steal a fragment of their power. It’s considered forbidden and monstrous within the world’s own moral framework, not a system heroes use.

How does Mistborn’s magic compare to the Stormlight Archive’s Surgebinding?

Surgebinding requires a bond with a sentient spren and moral growth through spoken Ideals, tying power directly to character development. Allomancy is largely inherited through bloodline and works identically for anyone who burns the right metal, regardless of their moral character.
