What Is the Recreance?
The Recreance was the mass abandonment of Radiant oaths by the Knights Radiant, approximately two thousand years before The Way of Kings. Every living Knight Radiant simultaneously lay down their Shardblades and Shardplates, walked away, and let their spren die. In one day the most powerful military force on Roshar dissolved itself.
What the World Believed
For two millennia the Recreance was explained as cowardice. The word itself means betrayal of duty. The Shardblades left behind were collected and distributed among kings and highprinces, becoming symbols of power and war throughout Roshar.
The Real Reason
The truth, revealed in Oathbringer, is that the Knights Radiant discovered the Nahel bonds were slowly consuming the Spiritual essence of Roshar itself. Every Surgebinding ability used drained something fundamental from the planet. They knew this because they found what happened to Ashyn, another world in the Rosharan system already destroyed by unchecked Surgebinding.
The Choice They Made
Faced with this knowledge the Radiants made an impossible decision: kill their spren to stop the drain. They chose to protect the world and accepted that history would remember them as traitors forever. It was an act of immense silent sacrifice that looked from the outside like mass cowardice.
Why It Still Matters
The new Radiants — Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, and Jasnah — are forming bonds again. The Stormfather warns Dalinar about this repeatedly. Spren like Sylphrena are deeply reluctant to bond again because they know what the last generation of bonds cost their people.
The Sibling and Urithiru
Urithiru was alive before the Recreance, powered by the Sibling. When the Radiants left, the Sibling went into Slumber and the tower magic systems went dormant. Recovering the tower is directly tied to healing from the damage the Recreance caused to the spren of Roshar.

The Knights Radiant discovered that Surgebinding was slowly destroying Roshar Spiritual essence, the same process that had already destroyed the nearby world of Ashyn. To stop the damage they abandoned their oaths and killed their bonded spren. They chose to be remembered as cowards forever rather than reveal a truth that might lead to Surgebinding continuing despite the catastrophic cost to the planet.
What happened to the spren when the Radiants abandoned their oaths?
When a Radiant broke their oaths the Nahel bond shattered and the spren was killed, trapped in the Physical Realm as an inert unconscious Shardblade. The dead Shardblades scattered across the world are the corpses of Radiant spren killed during the Recreance. Sentient spren can still hear their dead companions when they touch these blades in the present day.
Is the Recreance the reason Sylphrena was afraid to bond Kaladin?
Yes. Honorspren suffered greatly during the Recreance because Windrunners were the most numerous Order. Sylphrena decision to bond Kaladin goes against the explicit prohibition of honorspren leadership, who declared no new bonds after the Recreance. Her choice is an act of individual defiance and profound trust in Kaladin, overriding the official position of her entire people in Shadesmar.
Will the new Radiants face the same problem as the old ones?
This is one of the central unresolved tensions of the Stormlight Archive. The Stormfather acknowledges the danger is real. Dalinar and the new Radiants are knowingly forming bonds in a world where the same catastrophic outcome is theoretically possible.
